| Info | Sacramento developer Eleni Tsakopoulos-Kounalakis has been chosen by President Barack Obama as his nominee for the post of U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Hungary, the White House announced Friday.
Tsakopoulos-Kounalakis is president of AKT Development Corp., the Sacramento land company started by her father, Angelo K. Tsakopoulos.
She and her family have been involved in politics for years, through contributions and fundraising. Tsakopoulos-Kounalakis and her father donated money to the campaign of Democrat Phil Angelides when he ran for governor of California in 2006. She also raised money for Sen. Hillary Clinton’s bid for president, serving as head of Greek-Americans for Clinton.
She has served on the California State World Trade Commission and on the board of the World Council for Religion and Peace.
Her husband, Markos Kounalakis, is the publisher of Washington Monthly.
