InfoThe oldest of three children, Duane Sand grew up on small farms in North Dakota and Minnesota.

Like many in North Dakota, his humble beginning produced a spirit of determination and a tradition of service that would serve him well throughout his life.

At the age of twelve, his parents divorced, and Duane delved into his studies. He went on to attend Boys State and the U.S. Naval Academy.

In 1990, Duane graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD and began his service to our country. While in the Navy, Duane served on three different nuclear submarines, earning the rank of Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy.

Upon being discharged in 1999, Duane became the youngest candidate for U.S. Senate in the 2000 elections. Though his campaign was ultimately not successful, Duane received the second largest percentage of the vote any Republican received that year against an incumbent Democrat Senator.

Like thousands of reservists, Duane was recalled into the Navy in 2001. After serving on a submarine in Bangor Washington and spending a subsequent 10 months at the Pentagon, Duane was released from active duty in 2003.

Duane Sand's story has been nothing short of the classic American tale of hard work and perseverance.

At home in Fargo, North Dakota, Duane is married and has been blessed with two children. As an active member of his community, Duane serves in the North Dakota Navy Reserves, and owns a restaurant, a motel, and several apartment buildings in the Red River Valley.
