InfoGeoff Braasch, 41, is an announced candidate for the SP-USA Presidential nomination. He is also the Ohio State Party Chair, a labor and peace activist, currently a PhD candidate in the field of cultural anthropology at a theological seminary, openly gay, and has never before been a candidate for political office. Braasch is also a former Lutheran pastor and labor consultant. While he explains he has been a believer in the socialist cause since his college days, Braasch only joined the SP-USA in 2000. He describes his activism as follows: "I am an outspoken advocate of workers rights, a frequent and active strike and boycott supporter ... I have no record of arrests in protests -- however, I am a frequent protestor." As for his platform, he said: "My politics are simple. Perhaps some people will find my politics too simple. I believe that we need to bring about by democratic means, a radically democratic socialist society. It is as simple as that ... To my knowledge, this kind of society has not existed in modern history, and no one will know the answers in advance of a democratic revolution." Braasch vows that -- if nominated -- he will be "full-time" candidate for President. He was among the most active of candidates in the race -- but then we received reports in early October indicating that Braasch may soon withdraw from the race. When contacted, he wrote us that his "status is in a state of flux at this time. My final announcement [of a decision on the race] will be made soon."
