The Hon John Winston Howard MP was the 25th person to occupy the office of Prime Minister since Federation. He was sworn in as Prime Minister of Australia on 11 March 1996, following the Coalition’s decisive Federal election victory on 2 March 1996. Mr Howard was subsequently re-elected at elections in 1998, 2001 and 2004. He was defeated in 2007.

He also served as Treasurer from 1977-1983, Leader of the Liberal Party from 1985-1989, and 1995-2007, and Leader of the Opposition from 1985-89 and 1995-1996. He was the member for the Division of Bennelong on Sydney's Lower North Shore from 1974 until his defeat in 2007.
