InfoMolly Beth Malcolm has never forgotten the lessons her parents taught her when she was growing up in Winnsboro, a small town in the Piney Woods of Northeast Texas. * If you don’t like how things are, don’t complain. Do something about it. * Listen to those who have gone before you. There is much to be learned from wisdom gained through life experiences. * Keep working and you will make a difference. * Always vote. It is a privilege and a responsibility. * Do the right thing. It may not always be popular, but it will be what you should do and you can sleep well at night. Molly Beth has kept these words at heart while leading Texas Democrats through a time of unprecedented challenge since her election four years ago as the first woman to ever lead the Texas Democratic Party. As a former public school teacher, she knows there is much to be learned from her own experience as well. That’s why she became a Democrat after leaving the Republican Party ten years ago. Since that time, Molly Beth has demonstrated her love for the Democratic Party and her commitment to service on the state, national and local levels. * She was elected Texas Democratic Party Chair in 1998 and re-elected by acclamation in 2000. * She is a former Bowie County Precinct Chair who has helped organize Democratic high school, college and women’s organizations in Texas and Arkansas. * She has served on the Democratic National Committee since 1998 and was elected to the DNC’s Executive Committee in 2000. * She is Treasurer of the Association of State Democratic Chairs, serves on the ASDC’s Executive Committee and is Co-Chair of the Resolutions Committee. * She served as President of the Texas Democratic Women for two years and was named Member of the Year in 1998. She founded the Bowie County Democratic Women’s organization and served as its first president. * She has been a member of the State Democratic Executive Committee since 1996. She belongs to a wide range of Democratic organizations including the Tejano Democrats, the Coalition of Black Democrats, the Stonewall Democrats, the National Federation of Democratic Women, and the EMILY’s List Majority Council. Molly Beth gained vital experience in Democratic grassroots politics as a precinct chair before serving as Field Director for U.S. Congressman Max Sandlin’s 1996 campaign and then working as District Community Outreach Coordinator for his East Texas district. She has made grassroots support a top priority while serving as State Chair – and she has traveled extensively across Texas to attend events organized by local parties. She also has been in demand nationally. She represented the DNC on an international relations mission to Taiwan in 1999 and traveled to the Middle East as part of a bipartisan delegation to Israel in 2001. She served as a spokesperson for Democrats during the 2000 Republican National Convention in Philadelphia and was enlisted by national party leaders to campaign nationally for Al Gore and Joe Lieberman in the final months of the 2000 presidential race. Campaigns & Elections magazine named her to the `Rising Stars’ Class of 2000. Since beginning her career as a public school teacher, Molly Beth has remained steadfast in her commitment to public education as the state’s top priority. She moved from the classroom to the counselor’s office. She served as a counselor and drug free schools coordinator and co-authored the elementary guidance and counseling curriculum for Texarkana, Arkansas public schools. Drawing from her experience working with troubled students in the public school system, she initiated a successful revision of Arkansas law to give counselors a more viable role in efforts to protect students who had been abused at home. Molly Beth earned her BAS degree in elementary education at Southern Methodist University and her Masters Degree in counseling and guidance at Texas A&M University at Texarkana. She was honored with the Alumni Achievement Award from Texas A & M University-Texarkana in 1989. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor. She received a Texas Counseling Association Distinguished Service Award in 1993 and 1996 and was honored with the President’s Award from the Arkansas Association for Counseling, Guidance and Development in 1989. Molly Beth and her husband, Bruce Malcolm, are Texarkana residents. Molly Beth’s daughter is going to law school in the fall after graduating in May 2002 from the University of Texas at Austin. Her stepson is a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army.
