David Thorne has been nominated by President Obama as new United States Ambassador to Italy and Ambassador to San Marino.
He graduated from Yale University in 1966 with a BA in American History and received a Masters degree in journalism from Columbia University in 1971. Thorne served in the US Navy from 1966-1970 and is author of The New Soldier (Macmillan 1971). Over a thirty year career, David was an investor and entrepreneur in a wide variety of business ventures, including marketing consulting, real estate, publishing, and financial services. He is the brother in law of US Senator John Kerry. Thorne's father held a diplomatic position in Rome and the family had a home in the Italian capital as well as in Tuscany. He is married to Rose and has two children.
