InfoIsaac Sasson is a community leader, activist, philanthropist, and a retired scientist, cancer researcher, and Queens College teacher.

Isaac Sasson was born in the Middle East in Syria, grew up in Lebanon, and immigrated to the United States at the age of 15 with his parents and 6 brothers and sisters. Sasson settled in Brooklyn, NY and attended a public school, Abraham Lincoln High School, while working after school as a stock boy.

After graduating from High School, Isaac joined the United States Army and served proudly and honorably for two years. After the Army tour, he attended the City College of New York while working part time, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree.

Sasson, after a brief stint in industry, went on to the University of Connecticut on a fellowship, where he earned a PhD in Chemistry. He then came to Flushing, to do research and teach at Queens College. Isaac was going to stay just a couple of years. That was 32 years ago. Sasson loved the community and now has been living in the same building as when he first moved to Flushing.

Sasson joined the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center where he spent most of his professional career, being involved in cancer research and foundation relations work, while continuing to teach Chemistry at Queens College for the next fifteen years. Sasson wen on to the Einstein Medical College. His last professional work was as Director of Development for the Institute for Cancer Prevention.

Isaac has been involved in the Community as an organizer, a tenants' advocate, and a community activist. As President of his tenants association, Sasson got for his tenants rent reductions and restorations of service cutback. Isaac also organized two busloads of tenants to go to lobby Albany to lobby for renewal of rent stabilizations laws.

In recognition of his community involvement, Sasson was nominated to Community Board 7, where he served for 10 years on the Zoning committee, the Health committee, the Consumer Affairs committee and the Parks committee.

For the past three years, Sasson has been serving as President of the Holly Civic Association, one of the most ethnically-diverse civic organization in the country. Holly Civic is admired and recognized for its leadership role in fighting to protect the community's quality of life, infrastructure and environment, and its schools. Under his leadership, Holly Civic has just re-wrote its bylaws and imposed term limits for both its officers and Board members, one of the first associations to do so. Among his other community involvement, Sasson also serves on the Board of the local Jewish War Veterans organization and president of his temple. He works out at the Flushing YMCA , is an avid long-distance runner and has completed 19 marathons. His charitable foundation donates primarily to our area.

If elected to the Council, Sasson will bring to the Council the same leadership, integrity and energy he has displayed throughout his life for the benefit of the community and the City. He will continue to fight for the people, and believe that we need to change a City Council climate where developers and lobbyists get the ears of elected officials often to the detriment of the people. He pledges, to paraphrase President Obama, to “turn hope into reality, promises into fulfillments, and words into action.” Regardless of our faith, national origin and background, we all have common dreams and aspirations.
