InfoYen Shia Chou, a Queens resident, began her public service career in 1999 as a member of the Community School Board of District 26, an election she won with a landslide victory with the full support of her community. As a member of the Board, Yen Chou took the opportunity to bring powerful change to the quality of education in her community.

As a former teacher at The Mary Louis Academy, a Catholic private school, and an adjunct professor at Queensborough Community College, Yen Chou understands that a quality education is an ongoing process that starts in the classroom, inspired by teachers and encouraged by family and the community. Her dedication earned her the Tandy Technology Scholars Outstanding Teacher Award, and the United Federation of Teachers John Dewey Award, which has been awarded to commendable leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Eleanor Roosevelt and Hilary Clinton. Her experience and advocacy of education led to her appointment by Queens Borough President Helen Marshall to sit on the Community Education Council.

Motivated to further improve the quality of education, Yen Chou implemented and became the director for Aim Tutoring Academy in 1996, a thriving educational facility with over thousands students up to this day. In 2002, Yen Chou formed the Chinese-American Parent Student Council (CAPSC), a non-profit organization that mobilizes youths and parents to effect community wide change through education, civil service and leadership training. CAPSC has sub-entities, such as National Hero Council to honor Asian-American soldiers who have sacrificed their lives to protect our country, and National Women’s Advisory Council, to help Asian women of all ages to succeed in business and professional growth.

A graduate of Dartmouth’s Tuck Executive Education program and with the experience of managing a successful tutoring academy, Yen Chou is a well-respected entrepreneur and general advisor in her community. Her understanding of her community’s needs, from education to business to immigration, enabled her to build bridges uniting her community, fostering economic growth and allowing for greater influx of international skills and capita. Her outstanding achievements and civil service have earned her many awards such as:

* Asian Americans Business Development Center: Outstanding 50 Asian Americans in Business in 2004
* Saul Weprin Democratic Club: Outstanding Community Service Award in 2004
* The City Council of New York Proclamation in 2004
* International Leadership Foundation: Promoting Education Award in 2008
* Presidential Volunteer Service Award in 2008
* The NY Region of the US Department of Commerce’s Minority Business Development Agency Regional Director's Award in 2008

In 2003, Chou served on City Councilman David Weprin’s team as the special assistant for Asian American affairs and counselor, voicing concerns and issues on behalf of our community. As a public servant, she has been recognized by government leaders as the voice of Asian community in Queens. Yen Chou has received numerous Citations and Proclamations from the New York City Council, New York State Senators, and United States Congress, as well as many plaques of recognition from community leaders, non-profit organizations and ethnic associations.
