Elected to the Texas House of Representatives from District 37-3 in a July 17, 1973 special election and was re-elected in 1974.

Ronald Earle, a former member of the Texas House of Representatives, former presiding judge of the Austin Municipal Court, and former chief counsel of the Texas Judicial Council, was elected district attorney of Travis County in 1976. Re-elected five times without opposition, he is currently serving his eighth four-year term.

Known for innovations in prosecution, he created the Public Integrity Unit of his office, the first such unit in the country, to prosecute ethics violations in Texas State government; the first crime victim assistance program in a Texas prosecutor’s office; a number of pioneering child abuse initiatives, including the Family Justice Division of the District Attorney’s Office, the Child Protection Team, the Children’s Advocacy Center, and the Family Development Center, now part of Parents’ Anonymous of Texas.

Mr. Earle has been profiled in the New York Times, Time, Esquire, and Texas Monthly magazines, his innovative programs have been featured in national publications, including Parade Magazine, and cases prosecuted by his office have been subjects of various network television news programs.

He has been named Outstanding Young Lawyer in Austin, Public Administrator of the Year for Austin, and 1996 Texas Prosecutor of the Year. In 1999 he received the Neighborhood Peacemaker Award from the Austin Dispute Resolution Center, and in 2000 was named Elected Official of the Year by the Centex Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration. He received the Texas Bar Foundation Award for Advancing Legal Ethics in Texas and his office has been selected by the National District Attorneys Association as one of ten model offices in the country. Considered a pioneer of the emerging concept of community restorative justice, he has chaired Travis County’s Community Justice Council since 1990.

He and his wife, Twila Hugley Earle, taught an honors course at the University of Texas entitled Re-Weaving the Fabric of Community: The Theory and Practice of Community Building. Ms. Hugley Earle is a consultant on the application of chaos theory in human systems. They have been married for 27 years and are the parents of three grown children.
