She was a member of the Calsasieu Parish Police Jury from June 1976 to February 1980.
Margaret L. Welsh Lowenthal, a Democrat from Lake Charles, was sworn into office in April, 1980, representing House District 35, and served two terms. She was the first woman elected to the Louisiana Legislature from Calcasieu Parish.
She attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana and Louisiana State University, and graduated from Baylor University with degrees in Speech and English. Prior to her service as state representative, Margaret worked as a radio and TV announcer, was an owner of a public relations agency, worked as a private counselor, and served as a member of the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury.
As a member of the Legislature, Margaret served on numerous committees and authored many bills pertaining to the environment, forced heirship, victims' compensation, family violence, taxes, juveniles, domestic issues, public utilities, the arts, health, education, and women's issues. She was chosen as the 1983 Legislator of the Year by the Louisiana State Arts Council for her statewide contributions to the arts.
