Info | Ray Walter was elected to represent the people of the 148th District in the New York State Assembly on November 8, 2011. His district includes the Towns of Amherst and Pendleton, and part of the City of North Tonawanda.
As a practicing attorney focused on elder law and estate planning, Ray observes firsthand how our high taxes hurt the most vulnerable members of our community and force the most successful to move out. Ray’s goal always has been to work on behalf of his constituents to bring about necessary changes in government that will ensure future generations will have opportunities to raise their own families in Western New York. He currently serves as the Ranking Minority Member of the Election Law Committee, and on the Committees on Aging; Housing; Libraries and Education Technology; and Oversight, Analysis and Investigation.
For nearly 10 years, Ray built a successful career in the private sector before going back to school and pursuing a law degree at the University at Buffalo. During Ray’s time in law school he was very active, serving as a representative to the Student Bar Association, and as President of the local chapter of the Federalist Society. Ray also clerked for the United States Attorney’s Office, the Erie County District Attorney’s Office and for an area law firm, after serving as a research assistant for the Erie County Charter Revision Commission. He graduated magna cum laude, was admitted to practice, and has worked for Magavern Magavern Grimm LLP since 2007. In 2009, Ray was appointed and later elected to the Erie County Legislature where he served until his election to the Assembly.
Ray is an active participant in numerous civic and charitable organizations. He currently serves as a board member for the Amherst Senior Citizens Foundation, and as a coach for Amherst Youth Basketball. He previously served on the Amherst Traffic Safety Board, the Erie County Cultural Resources Advisory Board, and the County Executive’s Council on Economic Development.
Ray and his wife, Jennifer, live in East Amherst with their two sons, Ray and Jack.
