Nevada State Assemblyman

A native Nevadan, John Oceguera was born at St. Mary's Catholic hospital in Reno, on June 2, 1968, and spent most of his childhood years in Fallon.

John was faced with challenges early in life, and wore special leg braces and corrective shoes until the second grade. This didn't slow him down, and John became involved in the Cub Scouts and little league baseball. John persevered and soon worked his way out of the braces, excelled in several sports, and participated in the Junior Olympics for track and field.

John joined the work force at 11, mowing lawns for a local landscape company. Throughout junior and high school, John always had a part-time job, working at the area movie theater, pizza shop, and the ice factory. Despite the demands of school and his part-time jobs, John was an excellent student, and was elected National Junior Honor Society President in junior high. He lettered in track and played basketball and football. In high school he was a member of the state champion track and field team, and of the co-champion football team, and was on the basketball team, lettering in all three sports. On the track and field team, John was a member of the 4x400 relay, which set a state record.

John began his public service early in life, volunteering with the PTA in high school, and was a founding member of the Fallon chapter of SADD - Students Against Drunk Driving. He also began to seek office, first as junior class treasurer, then as student body vice president. He continued his excellence in education, was listed in Who's Who Among high school students, and was a member of the National Honor Society.

John's thirst for knowledge combined with his athletic ability was awarded when he was selected to be a member of the Sport for Understanding Track and Field team, traveling to New Guinea and Australia representing his country.

John started college at UNLV in 1986, and was named Sophomore of the Year by his fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega. John soon found himself working again, with America West Airlines, and relocated to San Antonio to open a new airline branch station there.

Ever since he could first remember, John wanted to be a firefighter, and in 1989 he was back in Fallon, working for the NAS Fallon Fire Department. Soon he was hired by the North Las Vegas Fire Department, working his way from firefighter, to paramedic, engineer, all the way to Captain.

During this time John continued his education, receiving his B.S. in Fire Administration from Cogswell College in 1995, and his Masters in Public Administration from UNLV in 1998. John is currently attending the UNLV Boyd School of Law, as well as working
full-time at the fire department.

John holds an impressive amount of fire, safety, medical and rescue certifications, from the State of Nevada, American Red Cross, Department of the Navy, and the National Fire Academy. His training as a firefighter far exceeds the norm, and the listing of courses he has taken reflects his ongoing commitment to public safety.

An especially telling example of John's commitment to his profession is a perfect attendance record at the North Las Vegas Fire Department, from 1991 to 1998, all this while attending college and volunteering in the community.

John has continued his service to the public; volunteering at Boy Scout camp, MDA camp and telethons, and helping organizations focusing on drug prevention messages to children (Drug Free Kids). During Fire Prevention Week John has gone into the classrooms, educating children about fire prevention.

In 2000, John Oceguera brought his community involvement to a new level when he was elected to the Nevada State Legislature as Assemblyman for District 16 in Southeast Las Vegas.

True to his strong work ethic, John serves on four legislative committees: Commerce and Labor, Constitutional Amendments, Judiciary, and Transportation.

Back in his district, John is known for keeping the lines of communication open to the residents and businesses there. He takes a grass roots approach to both campaigning and representation, often going door-to-door, meeting with the voters and hearing their concerns first-hand.

In Carson City, John has quickly earned a reputation for being thoroughly informed on the issues, ready to ask the tough questions and willing to go the extra mile for the district he represents.
