InfoT.V. News AnchorwomanThe love of West Virginia has always been important to Natalie. A seventh generation West Virginian, Natalie knows the value of hard work and persistence. They are traits her parents taught her brothers and sister as they grew up on the family farm in Marion County.

At West Virginia University, Natalie started out majoring in the family business --- education. Both her parents and four of her brothers and sister are teachers.

But the love of telling stories, especially positive ones about the people and places of West Virginia, made Natalie realize she wanted to 'teach' on more of a global perspective. That led her to a career as a broadcast journalist.

She changed her major from education to journalism in 1988 and never looked back.

It wasn't long after that switch that Natalie became the story.

In 1990, she was selected as the first female to represent the University as the Mountaineer mascot.

Despite the criticism, threats and verbal abuse, Natalie held her head high and carried the muzzleloader with pride.

What many don't realize is the students who were selected as the Mountaineer were never paid or provided a tuition stipend. The Mountaineer had to use his or her own money to travel the state to attend events.

That changed thanks to Natalie and her Mom. They encouraged the University to support the next Mountaineer by providing a tuition stipend and small financial allowance. Today, Mountaineers don't have to worry about how they will pay to travel the state or about paying their tuition.

As a television anchor and reporter, Natalie used that same drive and determination to win several statewide awards on her reporting of the Mountain State. Her feature stories emphasized the best of West Virginia.

As Secretary of State, Natalie wants to continue to encourage the best in all West Virginians.

She will work hard to standardize the election process to guarantee fair and honest elections. She will encourage more West Virginians to vote and get involved in our democracy by. She will push to provide a level playing field when it comes to financing campaigns. She will also use the office to feature the backbone of our economy --- small businesses.

Through her inspiration, more West Virginians are becoming involved in her campaign because they sense in her what they feel about themselves - inspiration to get involved and make a difference in the future of our great state.
