Info | Lilibet Ziller was born in Meridian, Mississippi in 1954. The former Lilibet Ziller, she is the daughter of Glennie Ziller and the late John D. Ziller. She attended Poplar Springs Elementary School and Northwest Junior High. She attended a boarding school beginning in her sophomore year of high school.
In 1982 Lilibet met her future husband in Washington, D.C. She’d begun working as an intern for U.S. Rep. G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery in 1978 while she completed her master’s degree. She intended to help out in Montgomery’s office for about six months and stayed for five years in the capacity of file clerk, then receptionist, then speech writer.
Aside from the political and social obligations that come with being the wife of a U.S. senator, Mrs. Hagel also is a mom and a teacher, and she remains active with various organizations and interests.
She teaches English as a second language twice a week. Most of her students are adults who are from eight or nine different countries. She volunteers to teach them through a church program based in McLean, Va., outside Washington, D.C.
She also has worked to raise money for cancer research and is a supporter of The Lab School of Washington. The school is internationally recognized for its programs for children and adults with learning disabilities.
She serves on the board of trustees of the Meridian International Center, a non-profit institution that promotes international understanding through the exchange of people, ideas and the arts.
The Hagels have two children, Allyn, 15, and Ziller, 13. Mrs. Hagel volunteers regularly at their schools and she has run two marathons and participates in BRAN, which stands for Bike Ride Across Nebraska, an event that raises money to help send Nebraska students to college.
