Info | SAMUEL, Edmund William, a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Blaenavon, Wales, on November 27, 1857; immigrated to the United States with his parents, who settled in Ashland, Schuylkill County, Pa., in 1859; attended the public schools; engaged in coal mining; learned the drug business and began the study of medicine; was graduated from the Jefferson Medical College at Philadelphia March 13, 1880, and commenced practice in Mount Carmel, Pa.; school director of Mount Carmel 1890-1894; elected as a Republican to the Fifty-ninth Congress (March 4, 1905-March 3, 1907); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1906 to the Sixtieth Congress and for election in 1908 to the Sixty-first Congress; resumed the practice of medicine in Mount Carmel, Pa.; president and general manager of the Shamokin-Mount Carmel Transit Co. 1908-1924; retired in 1925 and moved to Brooklyn, N.Y.; died in Mount Carmel, Pa., on March 7, 1930; interment in Mount Carmel Cemetery.
