Info | When you hail from a city containing more than eight million persons, grow-up in public housing, a place viewed by many as disadvantaged, attend a small college on the fringes of the big apple- Adelphi University, have the opportunity to study at Thurgood Marshalls alma mater- Howard University School of Law, move from Assistant District Attorney to Special Narcotics Prosecutor for the City of New York, join the State Investigations Commission investigating public officials, state employees and organized crime, find yourself appointed Judge of the New York State Workers Compensation Board, be asked by your peers to seek the office of State Legislator and then by what seems inexplicable circumstance, find yourself propelled into the United States Congress- the body recognized as the Board of Directors for the greatest industrialized country in the world- few would fault that person for believing that he had arrived. But Congressman Gregory W. Meeks (D) representing New Yorks Sixth Congressional District is not interested in arrival as much as he is in the journey.
Elected to serve the nearly 600,000 persons of Bellerose, Cambria Heights, Far Rockaway, Hollis, Laurelton, Jamaica, Richmond Hill, South Ozone Park, Springfield Gardens, St. Albans, and Queens Village, Meeks has done so with an urgency that has impressed his constituency and senior colleagues alike.
The Congressman is a member of the Committee on Financial Services, and its subcommittee on Capital Markets, Insurance, and Government Sponsored Enterprises (GSEs), as well as the subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit, and the subcommittee on Domestic Monetary Policy and Technology. Additionally, Meeks serves on the International Relations Committee and its subcommittee on Africa, and the subcommittee on East Asia and The Pacific. He successfully authored legislation that increased air service from New York City airports to communities in upstate New York- Albany, Buffalo, Syracuse, and Rochester and further illustrating his leadership ability, Meeks led the largest congressional delegations ever to visit the New York Stock Exchange and The United Nations. Also believing that effectiveness in legislative bodies requires consensus as well as steady prodding, Meeks is an active member of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC). And in 2001 became CBC Whip.
Meeks has gained significant praise for his balanced voting record and advocacy for labor and business issues. He is currently Chair of the CBCs High-Tech Committee. The panel seeks to ensure that the opinions of minority consumers, venture capitalists and Internet entrepreneurs can be heard as Congress debates key policy issues such as e-commerce, privacy, taxes on Internet purchases, high-speed Internet access, Encryption technology, and patent reform. Meeks seeks to create and sustain a positive environment for the growth of the new media business and emerging technologies. Still, while handling his expanded Congressional responsibilities, he remains committed to focusing on New York City and State.
As a recognized champion of working across political, business, labor, and religious lines, Meeks was elected to Chair the Council of Black Elected Democrats (COBED). COBED is a statewide organization of Black elected and Democratic Party officials.
Meeks is a member of several civic and professional organizations including: the National Bar Association, the Coalition of 100 Black Men, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the National Black Caucus of State Legislators Inc., the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, and the United Black Men of Queens. He founded the Jesse L. Jackson Independent Democratic Club (later renamed the Thurgood Marshall Regular Democratic Club) and remains active in grassroots community organizing.
Congressman Meeks resides in Far Rockaway, Queens with his wife Simone-Marie and has three daughters Ebony, Aja, and Nia-Aiyana.
