Interim Senator from New York in 1949; was a consultant to the Secretary of State in 1950;
Special representative of the President, with the rank of ambassador, to negotiate the Japanese peace treaty, 1950-1951;
Secretary of State in President Eisenhower's Cabinet from January 21, 1953, to April 22, 1959;
As Secretary of State headed American delegations to numerous international conferences, endeavored to create harmony among the free nations and peace throughout the world, and has traveled more widely in the course of his duties than any previous Secretary of State;
Died in 1959.
