InfoJohn Victor Evans, Sr.

He served in the U.S. Army as an infantryman in World War II and is a member of the American Legion and the V.F.W. He graduated from Stanford University in 1951 and entered public politics. He served three terms in the Idaho senate from 1953 to 1959, serving as majority leader of the senate from 1957 to 1959. He was mayor of Malad from 1960 0 to 1966. In 1967, he returned to the Idaho senate and served another four terms as minority leader untill his election as lieutanant governor in 1974. On January 24, 1977, Governor Evans succeeded Govenor Cecil, upon the latter's appointment as U.S. Secretary of the Interior by President Jimmy Carter. Governor Evans was then elected to a full four-term in 1978 and reelected in 1982. Governor Evans hosted the National Governors' Association's Annual Meeting in 1985. In 1987, he joined his family's D.L. Evans Bank as served as its president.
