InfoJohn David Merwin, the son of Miles and Marguerite L. Fleming Merwin, was born on St. Croix on September 26,1921. He spent his early childhood in St. Croix, but attended the Antigua Grammar School, the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, and in 1939-1940 the University of Puerto Rico.

He graduated from Yale University in 1943 with a bachelor's degree. Commissioned a second lieutenant in the artillery in April of 1943, he entered World War II with the Seventh United States Army as a captain.

After World War II, Mr. Merwin attended law school in Washington, D.C. and was admitted to practice in the state of Connecticut. Returning to the Virgin Islands, he established a law practice on St. Croix in 1949, but this was interrupted by a second call to military service in the Korean War. Assigned to the Far East, he served for seventeen months. Returning home, he entered politics and made a bid for a seat in the local Senate. In 1954, he was elected senator-at-large for the Virgin Islands.

After serving almost four years in the Senate, Mr. Merwin was appointed government secretary by President Eisenhower on December 23,1957. He served for four years and was succeeded by Ralph M. Paiewonsky in 1961.

Following closely upon this appointment, in 1958, he was selected governor of the Virgin Islands. Sworn in on Sept. 25, 1958, as the eighth appointed governor, he was the first native-born Virgin Islander to serve as governor under the American flag. Upon retirement from government service, he became consultant to the Chase Manhattan Bank in St. Thomas. Subsequently, he established a private law- practice.

He was married to Dadja Childs Merwin and they are the parents of one son, John David Merwin II. A Mason and an Episcopalian, he presently is a retired attorney-at-law in New Hampshire and travels extensively.
