InfoMichael "Mike" Sharp

With 26 years of experience as a Kansas City, Missouri, police officer plus a background in firefighting, and 18 years as a successful business owner, Mike Sharp combines the law-enforcement dedication and management savvy we need to lead our county’s central public-safety agency, as Jackson County Sheriff.

Mike is seeking the Sheriff’s post in the Jackson County Democratic Primary on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008. The General Election is scheduled for Nov. 4, 2008.

Mike’s goal is to utilize his background in public service and management to improve the quality of life in Jackson County and for everyone serving in the Sheriff’s Department.

A native of Lee’s Summit, Mike graduated from Lee’s Summit High School in 1977. He then graduated from Central Missouri State University in 1981, with a bachelor’s degree in Fire Science and a minor in Criminal Justice.

As he attended college, Mike served from 1977 to 1981 as a volunteer firefighter for the Lee’s Summit Fire Department.

In addition to his studies and service as a firefighter, Mike represents his family’s fourth generation in law enforcement:

His great-grandfather, Brit Sharp, spent 40-plus years as a deputy sheriff.
His grandfather, Clinton Sharp, was a deputy sheriff.
His father, Ben Sharp, was a police officer for six years with the Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Police Department.
And after he graduated from the Regional Police Training Academy in 1981, Mike Sharp spent a total of 26 years as a full-time and reserve officer with the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department.
He was a full-time police officer from 1981 to 1983, a reserve officer from 1983 to 1999, and a reserve Homicide Detective from 1999 to 2007, when he retired at the age of 47.

During his years as a reserve police officer, Mike also honed his management skills –as a construction supervisor for Kingston Construction Co. from 1983 to 1989, and as the owner of Wholesale Carpet Warehouse in Lee’s Summit from 1989 to 2007.

Proof of Mike’s managerial know-how is the fact that he started a business with little capital and sold it 17 years later as a highly successful and profitable business. He currently manages personally owned commercial properties in the Lee’s Summit area, including the newly renovated historic downtown district.

His civic memberships include the Ararat Shrine, Albert Pike Blue Lodge #219 in Independence, the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street Inc., and the Summit Democratic Club.

And now Mike is seeking to continue his career in public service and move our county’s law enforcement forward, by becoming the next Jackson County Sheriff.
