Infodetective with the Hopkins Police Department. Niemackl was originally running as a Congressional candidate in the 5th district against Keith Ellison but since the Republican candidate is an outspoken Ron Paul supporter and the CP had no candidate for U.S. Senate he changed his mind.

Biography

Minnesota has been my home all of my life. I was raised in Richfield with my father and grandparents. Growing up in a multigenerational home was a wonderful experience that taught me a mix of social norms and introduced me to the lessons learned from past generations. Our family attended Saint Peter Church in Richfield and was active in many functions. I joined the Cub Scouts at the church and completed the program before going on to Boy Scouts. Through the dedication, commitment, and support of the parents that led our troop, I was able to attain the rank of Eagle Scout.

I attended Catholic school in elementary and middle school before attending Richfield High School. My first job was with Lyndale Hardware in Richfield. It was an excellent job that taught me many trade skills. After the hardware store, I worked in construction and remodeling for a local business while continuing in school.

After graduating high school, I attended the University of Minnesota to begin an education in engineering following the example of my grandfather who worked as an aeronautical engineer. While at the University, I participated in the Air Force ROTC program. The program was excellent and I planned to continue in it with the goal of serving in the Air Force for six years after graduation. Unfortunately for my military plans, I quickly learned that engineering was not the right field of study for me. I left the University of Minnesota, and consequently the ROTC program, to explore other educational options.

The next stop in my educational voyage was Normandale Community College, where I took an interest in Law Enforcement. My mind was still not made up, however, and I took a break from school to start my own business. I rented a store front in Burnsville and with the help of many friends, Twin City Small Engine opened in May of 1999, offering yard care equipment and repair to the area residents. It was a risky venture that started out under funded, but I was full of hope in the future. The nature of the business was seasonal and struggled initially, but the business began to show promise after a few months. Unfortunately, the winter months were without customers and despite an overwhelming influx of customers in the spring, we were not able to escape the overwhelming financial burden that had built up during the winter. In August of 2000, the doors closed and I was financially destitute.

Determined not to give up, I immediately enrolled in classes to finish my degree and start my career. With the help of family and friends, and years of hard work, I was able to recover from the financial crisis I had faced, get a good education, and begin a career in Law Enforcement. The experience changed my life forever and I was able to gain invaluable knowledge about economics, financial security, and the challenges of owning a small business.

While completing my education in preparation for a career in law enforcement, I worked in security at Richfield High School and at the Mall of America. The timing on both offered a perspective of each before and after drastic changes in the approach within the institution. I was working at Richfield High School when the Columbine tragedy occurred. The job went from a relaxed atmosphere that focused on enforcing the rules to one of fear in the face of potentially deadly encounters. I was also employed at the Mall of America when our nation was attacked on 9-11. There was a drastic shift in the mentality of security at the mall during this time. We prepared for terrorist attacks by participating in scenario based drills and responded to calls of suspicious packages almost daily. These experiences gave me insight and prepared me to respond to similar calls for service as a police officer.

My career as a police officer also taught me many lessons about life and about people. While officers tend to see people at their worst, there is an opportunity to see the same people at their best. At times I had to make an effort to see people when they were at their best, but in the search I was able to find hope in some of the most difficult situations. That hope is my motivation for serving the community, despite the struggles and dangers that officers face each and every day.

Despite having a career that was both meaningful and financially stable, I continued in my pursuit of education. My reason for this pursuit is that it is important to avoid standing still in life and instead we should to continue grow as a person and progress as a society. I completed my Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice at Concordia University and have begun work toward my Masters of Theology at Saint Thomas University. The theology degree is a departure from my previous education as relating to law enforcement, but has opened new avenues of knowledge and has broadened my view of life. While this segment of my education has just begun, it has already proven its value to a greater understanding of the world.
