InfoCommissioner Eggelletion, Jr. was born April 23, l949 in Miami, Florida, and has resided in Broward County, FL, since l955. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in Tallahassee, Florida, in l971. Additional certificates and course work include Certified Barber and Hairstylist, Florida Teacher's Certificate, and advanced level studies in Urban Management at Florida Atlantic University.

Upon graduation from college, Commissioner Eggelletion began his career with Jack Eckerd Drugs, Inc. working in a managerial capacity from l971 to l974. Commissioner Eggelletion began his career as an educator in the Broward County School System at Cooper City High School in l974 where he taught until his transfer to Dillard High School in l979. Commissioner Eggelletion's tenure as an instructor of American Government and Economics at Dillard High School marks a return to the very high school where he received his own diploma in l967! Commissioner Eggelletion currently serves as a Diversity Specialist with the Broward County School Board in addition to owning and operating a chain of barber shops.

Commissioner Eggelletion is married to Carolyn Taylor Eggelletion, who is a principal in the Broward County School System. He is the proud father of two children, LaShawnda, who holds a Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology and is completing work on her Doctorate; and Josephus III, who is a graduate of Howard University in Washington, D.C. and presently enrolled in the Physical Therapists Masters Degree Program at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Florida.


Commissioner Josephus Eggelletion, Jr. was elected to the Broward County Commission on October 3, 2000. Commissioner Eggelletion currently serves on the following boards: Broward Employment and Training Administration Council (BETA), the Broward County Metropolitan Planning Organization, the South Florida Regional Planning Council and the Broward County Water Advisory Board. Prior to becoming a Commissioner he served as a Member of the Florida House of Representatives for 8 consecutive years. He was unopposed in his election to the Florida House of Representatives in November, 1992 becoming only the third person in the history of the State to run in an open seat for the first time unopposed. He was re-elected subsequently in 1994, 1996, and 1998, also unopposed.

As a first-term representative, Josephus Eggelletion was appointed Vice Chairman of the Natural Resources Committee and had the distinction of being one of only two freshman members appointed to the prestigious Appropriations Committee. His committee assignments during the 1995/1996 term included Appropriations Committee where he chaired the subcommittee on Fraud, Overpayment & Error Rate Elimination, Appropriations Subcommittee on Health and Human Services, Governmental Operations, Education, Joint Legislative Auditing, Utilities and Telecommunication and Natural Resources Committee. His assignments in 1997/1998 included Business Development & International Trade, where he served as Vice Chair, General Government-Appropriations, and Environmental Protection. During his last year he served on the Environmental Protection, General Government Appropriations, Joint Legislative Committee on Everglades Oversight, Utilities & Communications (Vice Chair) and the Consumer Affairs Councils. He accumulated an outstanding voting record and was ranked in the top quarter of the Florida Legislature by the Miami Herald. He has received a voting rank of 92% by Associated Industries of Florida and was a member of the Florida Chamber of Commerce top 40 legislators. He was considered one of the most effective floor debaters in the Florida House of Representatives and has never lost a point of order with respect to the house rules. During the 1999 floor debate on abortion he was successful in sustaining a point of order against the Speaker of the House.

As a State Representative, Josephus Eggelletion's vote was considered by many in the environmental community (environmentalists/environmental industry professionals) as a "must-have" vote on all environmental issues in the State of Florida. In 1998 he passed legislation which created the Environmental Justice Institute at FAMU. Some of his environmental legislation includes:

As State Representative, he was a member of the House Natural Resource Committee, whereas he co-authored and played a major role in shaping the Everglades Forever Act, the Petroleum Storage Tank Bill, and the Dry Cleaning Industry Clean-up Bill. During the 1996 session he was successful in tacking on a critical amendment favored by the Attorney General which killed an industry sponsored environmental self-audit bill.

Commissioner Eggelletion as former State Representative also co-authored the Brownfields Community Redevelopment Act during the 1997 legislative session and helped bring about a consensus between the House and Senate as well as business and environmental advocates.

In 1996 he was selected by President Clinton to help oversee the transition of Presidential power in Haiti. In 1998 he was selected by the T.J. Reddick Bar Association and the N.A.A.C.P. to draw the new Single Member Districts for the Broward County School Board.

Commissioner Eggelletion is the founder and president of Golf Oriented Leadership Foundation, Inc., (G.O.L.F.). GOLF is a non-profit corporation dedicated to enriching the lives of minority, disadvantaged children by involving them in the sport of golf. The GOLF Foundation underwrites country club memberships, provides golf equipment including golf clubs, golf bags, and lessons for minority junior golfers. There are approximately 67 minority children currently involved in the Foundation's program.
