InfoMichael Patrick "Mike" Byron

Mike was born at Walter Reed Army Hospital (1956) in Washington, D.C. His father, Paul J. Byron, was a career U.S. Air Force non-commissioned officer who retired with the rank of Master Sergeant. His mother, June E. Byron, was a Registered Nurse. Thus, Mike grew up in an environment of service to country and patriotism. As a child and young man, Mike deeply internalized our countrys commitment to freedom and individual rights. First as a child and later as an adult, Mike lived abroad in the Philippines and in Israel, and he has traveled through several dozen other countries as well.

Mike took a GED examination and left high school to join the U.S. Navy in 1975, serving as a Guided Missile Fire Control Technician aboard the USS Long Beach; and he was honorably discharged in 1978. After his discharge, Mike traveled by back-pack across the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. Mike lived and worked in Israel for almost one year in 1978-1979, where he made many friends of both Jewish and Arabic heritage.

Returning to the United States to continue his education, Mike worked to pay his own way through undergraduate and graduate schools. After completing his B.A. in Political Science at California State University, Chico, in 1984, Mike's first professional job was with the IRS as a Revenue Officer in Oceanside, CA. Working for the IRS gave Mike insight into how government organizations operate, and inspired him to continue his studies in Political Science.

In 1988, Mike left the IRS to pursue a Masters in Political Science at San Diego State University, graduating in 1991. Mike completed his Ph.D. in Political Science in 1996 from UC Irvine. His academic emphases include societal learning systems, computer simulations of International Relations, and Peace Studies. Mike has published numerous professional papers as well as authoring a chapter in a recent book "The Performance of Social Systems". His ideas have been well received in professional conferences. He currently serves on the editorial board of of one professional publication.

Mike returned to live in Oceanside after completing his Ph.D. Since then, he has taught most of the sub-disciplines of Political Science (American Government, International Relations, Comparative Politics, Political Economy and Political Methodology) at both the lower and upper division levels, in local colleges and universities, including at the extended campus of Palomar College at Camp Pendleton. Mike helps students understand political science in a diverse range of courses including Introduction to Political Science, American and California Government, Political Methodology, Peace Studies, International Relations, International Political Economy, and Comparative Government. Mike is very much sought after as an instructor, due to his clarity of teaching, his engaging communications style, and his encouragement for students to think for themselves. Among the many highly complimentary evaluation comments of his students was this one from a Marine officer: If he has a clone, hire him too.

Mike currently serves on the Executive Board of the Palomar Faculty Federation (AFT/CFT Local 6161). Between 2000 and 2002 he served on the Palomar College Faculty Senate. Additionally, he served on the Board of Directors of the Research Committee on Systems and Cybernetics from 1988 to 2002. This organization is a Research Committee of the International Sociological Association. He remains on the editorial board of that organization's Journal of Sociocybernetics. Mike is also the current President of the Democratic Club of Oceanside and Carlsbad .

In 2002, Mike was the Democratic Party's write-in candidate for the new 49th Congressional District. He is currently seeking nomination for the 49th Congressional District, which spans Northern San Diego and Southwestern Riverside counties. He continues to teach, and is dedicated to helping students understand the Constitution of the United States of America and the Bill of Rights.
