Info“My parents came to Nebraska in hope of a better life-The Good Life-for their children. I have been fortunate to have the opportunities they dreamed of, and I was proud to give back to my country by serving in the United States Marine Corps.”
-Max Yashirin

Max Yashirin is the oldest of four brothers that grew up in a hardworking, middle class family in Northeast Lincoln. His father worked long hours as a janitor and his mother taught piano lessons in congregations across the city. His parents instilled a strong work ethic in Max that is with him to this day.

Like many people across the state Max began working at a young age, with his first job in the corn fields of Nebraska de-tasseling. Max attended Lincoln Northeast High School and during this time he became one of the youngest managers at a Runza restaurant helping to support himself and his family. At this time, Max was also a lead member in the Lincoln Youth Symphony Orchestra and had the opportunity to be part of a Nebraska delegation to China. To this day he vividly remembers the massive disparity between the haves and have not’s he witnessed over there, and how lucky we are to grow up in America.

Max has always felt that service to our country is one of the highest aspirations a person can have. Immediately after graduating from high school Max answered the call to serve and began his career in the United States Marine Corps. Max attended Marine Basic Training in San Diego and his great Nebraska work ethic helped him excel in his training. In the last week of his training in San Diego, the atrocities of 9/11 occurred and Max knew he would get a chance to serve his country.

Max returned to Nebraska that fall where he continued to manage a Runza, obtained his insurance license, was a stage hand at the Lied Center, and took part in monthly Marine drills in Omaha. On top of everything, he enrolled at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a Major in International Business and double minors in Economics and Russian.

In April 2004, Max’s college education was put on hold as he was called to active duty in the Marine Corps and was deployed to Iraq. Max was stationed in Al-Asad Air Base in Iraq and during his time there he saw firsthand the massive mismanagement of the war. Max and other members of his unit quickly realized they didn’t have the equipment necessary and had to pick through blown up wreckages and scrap yards looking for anything they could use to armor their vehicles. He also saw firsthand the financial mismanagement and waste of American’s tax dollars by the current leadership and the Private Military Contractors. He was over there when the “despicable” Abu Gharib torture scandal broke and saw how it destroyed our standings overseas. Max’s brother Nick is currently deployed in Iraq serving in the United States Air Force.

Max returned home to Nebraska in May of 2005 and got a job as Operations Manager at the Pershing Auditorium in Lincoln managing 10 staff everyday and 50-60 in the days leading up to and during events. He also picked up his education where he had left off at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He currently works at Region V Services working with people that have mental and physical disabilities.

Throughout his life Max has always successfully balanced his work, education, family life, and service to our country which he attributes to his strong Nebraska work ethic and strong family values.
