InfoSupervisor Carmen Chu is committed to creating a safer, more livable community in San Francisco and in District 4. A community that educates its children, ensures public safety, cares for the elderly and creates good jobs.

Appointed as the District 4 Supervisor in September 2007 by Mayor Gavin Newsom, Supervisor Carmen Chu serves the greater Sunset District. She has experience and expertise in public policy and finance, and brings a nuts and bolts understanding of how City government operates.

As a Supervisor she has worked to make government more accessible, holding the first series of district police outreach meetings in Chinese and holding regular office hours. During her time in office, she has taken on pedestrian safety issues, helped small businesses, worked on improving MUNI and tackling homelessness.

As Deputy Director of the Mayor’s Office of Public Policy and Finance she helped create the 311 Customer Service Center, a universal phone line for citizens to access city information; and the development of long-term fiscal projections for the City & County of San Francisco.

The daughter of Chinese immigrants, Supervisor Chu speaks fluent Cantonese. She learned the value of hard work and determination by working from an early age in the restaurant owned by her parents.

Supervisor Chu has received two degrees in public policy: a B.A. from Occidental College, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa (2000). Supervisor Chu also earned a Master’s degree from U.C. Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy, where she was the distinguished recipient of a PPIA fellowship (2003).
