InfoMy name is Kathleen J. Cummings. People call me Kathy.

Many life events have brought me to the decision to run for Illinois U.S. Senate. I’ve lived in Illinois almost 40 years. I am the proud mother of two daughters and grandmother of two grandsons. As a Chicago Public School special education teacher for 20 years, I have seen how the system works and fails.

My teaching profession enabled me to see the effect of chemicals on children’s academic performance and behavior. There are benefits for feeding students organically. I saw value in using natural lighting in the classroom, while saving money. Students preferred natural lighting, were more calm with it and requested it. I know firsthand the benefits of personal, school and community gardens.

My compact yard blooms with an award-winning, naturalized garden, a fish pond, prairie plants and organic herbs, fruit, and vegetables. Fish waste from the pond becomes fertilizer. Collecting rainwater in a rain barrel attached to the garage downspout helps with water bills. Gerbils chew newspaper which becomes mulch for the garden.

My interest in lowering my utility bills and using natural energy moved me to install solar for my electricity and hot water. I sell electricity back to ComEd.

As I walk my dog, I collect pop, beer cans, and paper to recycle. My motto is: Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Recycle and buy items with little packaging.

In 2006, I ran for State Representative but the Democrats refused me ballot access all the way to, and including, the Illinois Supreme Court! Read about that here.
