Sparkman; reelected to the fourteen succeeding Congresses and served from January 28, 1947, to January 3, 1977; chairman, Committee on Public Works and Transportation (Ninety-fourth Congress); was not a candidate for reelection in 1976 to the Ninety-fifth Congress; died June 4, 1997.
