Info | Full Name: Robert Alton "Bob" Gammage
Bob Gammage learned early the values and rewards of hard work. At 9, he was delivering "The Saturday Evening Post" door-to-door. At 12, just a year after his dad passed away, Bob was holding down his first regular job, sacking groceries at Barnett's Supermarket.
Bob worked his way through junior high, high school, and college. He ushered in theaters, clerked in dry goods stores, loaded pipe on a derrick barge, built boats, life-guarded, pumped gas, and worked at many other jobs to earn his school and living expenses.
Bob was also a star football player for Houston's Milby High School, and was awarded football scholarships to Del Mar College and the University of Corpus Christi (now Texas A & M - Corpus Christi). By winning athletic scholarships, an academic teaching fellowship at Sam Houston State University, and working at outside jobs, Bob was able to earn an undergraduate degree, master's degree, and two law degrees (The University of Texas School of Law and the University of Virginia School of Law).
Bob Gammage's values were forged by hands-on hard work. These are the values he will carry with him as Governor of Texas.
Bob's commitment to education runs deep. A product of Texas public schools himself, he was the first in his family to earn a college degree, and earned a Texas Teacher's Certificate at the same time. After graduation, he was awarded a teaching fellowship for graduate studies at Sam Houston State Teachers College; he was a teacher and administrator before he became a lawyer. When he left the Texas Supreme Court, Bob was invited to return to two of his alma maters as a visiting professor of political science and as a visiting professor of public administration. Bob is a recognized professional ethics consultant and the Texas General Land Office contracted with him to instruct its employees on ethical standards for public servants. As a member of a State Bar of Texas committee, he helped develop an instructional program for Texas public school students on their legal rights and responsibilities. He served on a citizens advisory board on educational quality for a middle school in Arlington, and he is frequently invited to visit with Texas high school classes to discuss the administration of justice and other legal and political issues.
As an appellate judge on the Texas Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Texas, Bob participated in all four Texas public school finance decisions. He believes that providing only a constitutionally "adequate" public school system is not good enough for our children, nor is it good enough for our state's social and economic development which depends on a high-quality solid educational foundation for our children. Bob Gammage believes we can, and must, do better than this. He believes that it is in the best interest of this and all future generations of Texans to create and permanently fund an "excellent" system of free public schools for all of our children, and that it must be our goal to see that, at the very least, each and every child in Texas graduates from high school, and does so with an educational background that enables that student to continue to grow and learn and become a productive, contributing, responsible and self-sustaining member of our society. Bob Gammage is dedicated to that goal.
