Info | STANFILL, William Abner, a Senator from Kentucky; born in Barbourville, Knox County, Ky., January 16, 1892; attended the public schools and Union College; graduated from the law department of the University of Kentucky at Lexington in 1912; admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice in Barbourville, Ky.; moved to Hazard, Ky., in 1916 and continued the practice of law; member of the board of regents of Morehead State Teachers College 1927-1931; member of the board of governors of the Kentucky Children’s Home at Lyndon, Ky., 1933-1936; appointed on November 19, 1945, as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Albert B. Chandler and served from November 19, 1945, to November 5, 1946, when a successor was elected; was not a candidate for nomination to the vacancy in 1946; resumed the practice of law; retired; resided in Lexington, Ky., where he died June 12, 1971; interment in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
