University, North Texas State University, and University of Texas; served on the staff of Speaker Sam Rayburn of the House of Representatives, Washington, D.C., 1941-1942; served in the United States Navy as a lieutenant commander from 1942 to 1945 in the Pacific and European theaters; recalled to active duty in the Korean conflict; captain, United States Naval Reserve; businessman with diversified interests including farming; served in the State senate, 1955-1962, and was president pro tempore, 1961; elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-seventh Congress, by special election, January 30, 1962, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Sam Rayburn; reelected to the nine succeeding Congresses and served from January 30, 1962, to January 3, 1981; chairman, Committee on Veterans� Affairs (Ninety-fourth through Ninety-sixth Congresses); was not a candidate in 1980 for reelection to the Ninety-seventh Congress; was a resident of Denton, Tex., until his death there on April 13, 1992.
