Info | RIGGS, Jetur Rose, a Representative from New Jersey; born near Drakesville (now Ledgewood), Morris County, N.J., June 20, 1809; received an academic education; was graduated from the New York College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1837 and commenced practice in Newfoundland, N.J.; member of the state general assembly in 1836; one of the founders of the District Medical Society of Passaic County, N.J., in 1844 and served as president 1846-1848; moved to California in 1849 and was in charge of the hospital at Sutters Fort; returned to New Jersey and settled in Paterson in 1852; member of the state senate in 1855-1858; elected as an Anti-Lecompton Democrat to the Thirty-sixth Congress (March 4, 1859-March 3, 1861); was not a candidate for renomination in 1860; resumed the practice of medicine in Paterson, Passaic County, N.J., later moved to Drakesville (now Ledgewood), N.J., and died there November 5, 1869; interment in the Presbyterian Cemetery, Succasunna, Morris County, N.J.
