He was an unsuccessful Whig Party candidate for the Minnesota Territorial Council in 1853. He was elected by the Republicans to the United States House of Representatives in 1868. He was elected to the Minnesota Senate as a Democrat. He was also a member of the Free Soil Party.
He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the United States Senate in 1864.
