InfoMercer County Treasurer, 1994-present

Mike Bertelsen was born on August 18, 1959 in Monmouth, Illinois. He is the son of the late Jack Bertelsen, who died on April 6, 1982 and Jane Sackman Bertelsen Chandler. Mike grew up on a farm near Seaton, Illinois in Mercer County, a small farming community of about 240 people. Mike learned the value of hard work and determination from both his father and mother. Mike’s father was a farmer and an auctioneer and Mike’s mother was a housewife. Mike has a sister, Laura, who is a little over two years younger and lives in Oquawka, Illinois and a brother who is fifteen years younger, Andy, who lives in Flagstaff, Arizona. Mike married his wife Sandy on May 23, 1981 and they have two children, a son Derek, 22 and a daughter, Jackie, 17. Mike and Sandy reside in rural Aledo, the county seat of Mercer County.

Mike graduated from Aledo High School in 1977 and attended St. Ambrose College (now University) in Davenport, Iowa from August 1977 to June 1979. Mike was involved in 4-H, FFA, Student Council and athletics while in school. Mike then went to work for Mills Cattle Company in Kearney, Missouri for one year before returning home to the family farm. Mike went to work for WRMJ-FM in Aledo in the fall of 1981 and was there until March 1986 when he left to work for WQNZ-FM/WANT-AM in Natchez, MS. While there he covered various local events and served as music director. Mike met several people involved in the civil rights movement and helped with the Trent Lott for U.S. Senate campaign in 1988. In late June 1989 Mike and his family moved to Jackson, TN where Mike worked for WTNV-FM/WTJS-AM. Mike served as music director and was a campaign volunteer for the President George H.W. Bush campaign in 1992. Mike moved back to Mercer County in June 1993 and started with the Mercer County Treasurer in September 1993. Mike ran for Mercer County Treasurer in 1994 winning election to that office and winning re-election in 1998, 2002 and 2006. While in office Mike has streamlined operations utilizing a variety of computer software programs. Mike served as president of the Illinois County Treasurers Association in 2007.

Mike has served as Republican precinct committeeman for Perryton Township since 1998 and has served as the Mercer County Republican Central Committee treasurer from 1998 until April 2006 when Mike was elected chairman of the Central Committee. Mike was re-elected in March 2008. Mike was appointed in January 2007 as a township trustee for Perryton Township, filling an unexpired term. Mike was county coordinator for Judy Baar Topinka, Illinois State Treasurer and Republican gubernatorial candidate from August 1997 until November 2006. Mike has been a delegate at the Illinois Republican Convention in 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008. Mike was on the February 2008 primary ballot as an alternate delegate for presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani in the 17th Congressional District.

Mike is a fiscal conservative who is highly concerned about the current state government fiscal crisis. His knowledge of budgetary matters is key in helping stop the overspending, which has burdened Illinois. Mike also believes in good, overall public service to the constituents. Sound fiscal policies are the cornerstone to more efficient government.
