Info | CRAIG, Samuel Alfred, a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Brookville, Jefferson County, Pa., November 19, 1839; attended the common schools of his native town and Washington and Jefferson College, Canonsburg, Pa.; learned the printer’s trade and taught school; enlisted in the Union Army as a private April 19, 1861; promoted successively to second lieutenant, first lieutenant, and captain of Company B, One Hundred and Fifth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry; commissioned captain in the Veteran Reserve Corps, United States Army, and served continuously four years and three months; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1876 and commenced practice in Brookville, Pa.; elected district attorney of Jefferson County in 1878; elected as a Republican to the Fifty-first Congress (March 4, 1889-March 3, 1891); unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1890; resumed the practice of law in Brookville, Pa., where he died March 17, 1920; interment in Brookville Cemetery.
