Unsuccessful Republican candidate for Governor in 1932, 1934, and 1936. Throughout his political career, Griswold almost always was the leading vote getter on the Republican ticket, usually even leading the presidential electors.

Governor of Nebraska 1940-1946. As an internationalist Republican, he supported Willkie at the 1940 Republican convention and then supported the lend lease program.

Unsuccessful candidate for the Republican nomination for United States Senator in 1946; his defeat was possibly due to his moderate reputation in foreign affairs

Died on 4/12/1954. Suffered a heart attack while on his way home from a party at the home of Admiral Arthur Davis at 10 p.m., 4/11/1954; taken to the naval hospital at Bethesda, Md., where he died a few hours later. Interment in Fairview Cemetery, Scottsbluff, Nebr. Griswold's death gave the Democrats a temporary 48-47 edge in the US Senate.
