Governor of Nebraska 1940-1946. As an internationalist Republican, he supported Willkie at the 1940 Republican convention and then supported the lend lease program.

Suffered a heart attack while on his way home from a party at the home of Admiral Arthur Davis at 10 p.m., 4/11/1954; taken to the naval hospital at Bethesda, Md., where he died a few hours later. Interment in Fairview Cemetery, Scottsbluff, Nebr. Griswold's death gave the Democrats a temporary 48-47 edge in the US Senate.
