InfoCRUMP, Edward Hull, a Representative from Tennessee; born on a farm near Holly Springs, Marshall County, Miss., October 2, 1874; attended the public schools; engaged in agricultural pursuits; apprenticed as a printer in 1890; moved to Memphis, Tenn., in 1892; employed as a bookkeeper; engaged in the wholesale mercantile business, the manufacture of harness and buggies, and later in the banking, mortgage-loan, and real-estate businesses; also interested in farming; delegate to the Democratic State conventions in 1902 and 1904; member of the Memphis Board of Public Works in 1905; fire and police commissioner in 1907; mayor of Memphis 1910-1916; delegate to the Democratic National Conventions in 1912, 1924, 1928, 1936, 1940, 1944, and 1948; county treasurer of Shelby County 1917-1923; member of the Democratic State committee 1926-1930 and of the Democratic National Committee 1936-1945; elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-second and Seventy-third Congresses (March 4, 1931-January 3, 1935); was not a candidate for renomination in 1934; Regent of the Smithsonian Institution 1931-1935; again elected mayor of Memphis, in 1939; resumed his activities in the mortgage-loan, investment, real-estate, and insurance businesses; also engaged in farming; died in Memphis, Tenn., October 16, 1954; interment in Elmwood Cemetery.
