Mike McWherter for Tennessee Governor 2010

Mike McWherter, the Democratic nominee for Governor, is the only candidate remaining who has not held an elected office, bringing to the race a fresh, outside perspective as a successful businessman. For the past 20 years, Mike has owned and operated a successful beverage distributorship in Jackson, Tennessee.

A West Tennessee native and graduate of Union City High School, Mike earned his law degree from Vanderbilt University and worked in private practice in Nashville before moving to Jackson to start his business and work in the community.
In addition to running his distributorship, Mike is the Chairman of the Bank Board of First State Bank, headquartered in Union City, and serves on the board of directors for the Jackson Energy Authority.

As Governor, Mike is committed to focusing first and foremost on the challenge of creating more jobs in all of the state’s 95 counties. During the campaign he has been a strong advocate for building on Governor Bredesen’s success in economic development by continuing a proactive posture when competing against other states for business relocation and expansion, including those companies that will be needed to supply recent major industry investments in the energy and automotive sectors. He believes that Tennessee must preserve its job-friendly environment by keeping taxes low and offering businesses that will create full-time good-paying jobs tax incentives and job training support. When he made his formal announcement earlier this year, Mike unveiled a proposal to provide small businesses with the same tax breaks that the state currently offers large industries, stressing that the vast majority of jobs in Tennessee are created by small businesses of 20 employees or less. In addition, Mike has advocated incentives to support job growth and business expansion in rural areas by tapping underutilized federal rural development programs and forging stronger public-private partnerships with local existing banks and businesses that are willing to invest in job growth. He has also outlined plans to enhance state support for minority and women-owned businesses that seek technical support and guidance to grow and expand their services.

As a member of the Tennessee Business Roundtable, Mike has also been a strong advocate for comprehensive education reform and been an outspoken supporter of expanding Governor Bredesen’s Diploma Project and Pre-K program. He has also recommended greater utilization of our state’s undervalued community colleges and technology centers.

Mike McWherter and Family for Tennessee Governor 2010

If elected Governor, Mike will work to ensure Tennesseans have access to affordable, quality health care. He will follow the examples of his father, former Governor Ned McWherter, and Governor Phil Bredesen by standing up for working families and applying his common-sense business experience to State Government.

Mike currently resides in Jackson with his wife, Mary Jane, and their children, Walker and Bess.
