InfoOn Tuesday, March 27, 2012, attorney Jacqueline "Jackie" Townes McGee, a former state representative, announced her democratic candidacy for Missouri Lieutenant Governor. Citing a commitment to rebuilding communities and reinvesting in human capital, especially our children, Townes McGee understands the issues and challenges that affect Missouri’s bottom line – jobs and the economy.

Having served four terms (1986-1994) in the Missouri House of Representatives (District 42, Kansas City), Townes McGee co-sponsored and passed several House and Senate Bills that strengthened protections for the state’s most vulnerable citizens – our children (House Bill 1030 Created Crime of Endangerment of Children when They are Present During Drug Sales or Transactions; House Bill 1370 Enhanced Revenues to Children’s Trust Fund and Domestic Violence Shelters; and Senate Bill 253 Strengthened Collection of Child Support Enforcement and Medical Support Enforcement). While serving in the Missouri House of Representatives, she served on the following committees: Children Youth and Families; Urban Affairs; Judiciary; Joint Committee on Rules and Administrative Procedure; and Appropriations for General Administration. She also served as Chairman of the Missouri Legislative Black Caucus and as a member of the Children’s Trust Fund Board of Directors. Other legislative involvement included: National Conference of State Legislators, National Order of Women Legislators, and the National Black Caucus of State Legislators.

After serving in the Missouri House of Representatives, Townes McGee ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Congress in 1994. Since that election, she has chosen to focus her life’s work on remaining anchored in both urban neighborhoods and small rural communities with limited economic resources. She is a licensed attorney whose law practice focuses on non-profit corporate representation and real estate development. She has volunteered countless hours supporting programs that empower people through education and providing the tools and resources that transform people into self-supporting citizens. Other notable achievements during her political career include passage of legislation establishing a Neighborhood Tourism Development Fund in Kansas City that requires 10% of hotel/motel tax be set aside for sponsorship and development of neighborhood related tourism events (Senate Bill 295); the Missouri Organ Donor Program (Senate Bill1700); and the Crime of Ethnic Intimidation Bill (Senate Bill 678).

Jackie Townes McGee was born and raised in Southeast Missouri. She attended Elementary and Middle schools in Steele, Missouri and graduated from Hayti High School. Ms. McGee holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Missouri-St. Louis and a law degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
