Info | Sheriff Froehlich was born in Elizabeth,
New Jersey, to George and Henrietta Froehlich. He came to the sheriff's post from the Elizabeth Police Department where he had served almost twenty years, attaining the rank of lieutenant.
Known as an advocate of police rights,
Froehlich took a leave of absence from the police department before assuming
an elected city council post. It was from this office he was first elected sheriff.
During his career with the Elizabeth Police Department, he received
many commendations for excellent police and community relations work.
In 1962 he received the N.J. P.B.A valor medal for saving three children
in an Elizabeth house fire.
The Sheriff served in the Marine Corps during the Korean war. Received
a bachelor of science degree in sociology from Kean College and has attended several courses in corrections and court management.
Sheriff Froehlich is married and is the father of three daughters - Debra, Rene (deceased), and Lora.
Several significant achievements have been credited to his terms of office:
In 1983 the Search & Rescue unit was started. Directed by
Sergeant John Gillespie, the unit includes dogs used in patrol,
arson investigation, bomb recognition, tracking and narcotics.
In an attempt to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and provide
a cleaner environment, the Sheriff's office converted fuel
to a compressed natural gas in one of its K-9 vehicles during 1992.
The Sheriff's office under Ralph Froehlich became the first in the state
to establish a court house security unit. All persons entering the court complex must pass through security screening devices. Each year hundreds of weapons and other contraband are confiscated. This system serves as a model for other court house security systems.
The "senior citizens identification program" provides identification cards
and emergency notification information for county senior citizens.
In 1993 Sheriff's Officers along with cooperation from Elizabeth High School students produced and distributed a gun safety video directed to high school students. This video calls attention to the tragedy associated with careless possession and handling of weapons, by youths.
Sheriff Froehlich has served as president of the N.J. State Sheriff's association three times. He also serves on many civic groups and organizations.
Sheriff Froehlich is a member of the Sheriffs Judiciary Liaison committee
to develop minimum standards of court security throughout New Jersey.
Sheriff Froehlich is the current chairman of Public Safety for the
Union County Alliance.
Sheriff Froehlich is the longest running sheriff in Union County history.
