• Born: Aug. 27, 1922, in Charlotte Thompson, a rural Kershaw County community

• Education: Graduated from The Citadel, 1942; member Phi Beta Kappa; classmate and future U.S. Sen. Fritz Hollings said West was “the smartest fella in the class;” law degree, USC, 1946

• Military service: World War II veteran; commissioned a lieutenant in the U.S. Army on June 10, 1942, and served until Feb. 22, 1946

• Public service: State Highway Commission, 1948-52; state Senate, 1955-66; lieutenant governor, 1967-71; governor, 1971-75; U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia, 1977-81

• Family: Wife, Lois; children, Douglas, Shelton and John Jr.
