48 year-old Berejiklian was born of Armenian migrant parents and grew up in Willoughby. A Master of Commerce graduate from UNSW, prior to entering Parliament Berejiklian worked as a National General Manager within one of Australia's largest financial institutions. She then worked on the staff of several Liberal MPs, including her predecessor as MP for Willoughby, then Liberal leader Peter Collins. Berejiklian served as President of the NSW Young Liberals 1995-96, and succeeded Collins and entered Parliament in 2003, but only after having to fight of a strong challenge from Willoughby Mayor Pat Reilly. Berejikjlian was first appointed to junior portfolios in 2005, but became one of the Opposition's higher profile front benchers as Shadow Transport spokesperson. In government as Minister for Transport after 2011 election, she was one of the government's strongest performers, responsible for major new public projects and the successful rollout of the Opal card. She was elected Liberal Deputy Leader when Mike Baird succeeded Barry O'Farrell as Premier in 2014, and switched to the Treasury portfolio after the 2015 election. Berejikilan succeeded Baird as Liberal Leader and Premier in January 2017, left with the task of recovering the government's popularity after several unpopular policy decisions by Baird in 2016.
