InfoJudge Jan Goldsmith was appointed to the San Diego Superior Court in December, 1998. Prior to his appointment, Goldsmith served three terms in the California State Assembly representing a district that included northern San Diego City stretching from Mira Mesa to the Escondido border. During his career in the Assembly, Goldsmith held various leadership positions including majority floor leader, member of rules committee and chairman of the banking and finance committee. He also helped write new guidelines aimed at avoiding another Orange County financial fiasco.

Before his election to the Assembly, Goldsmith held office as Poway’s first elected mayor where he balanced the budget and presided over the lowest crime rate in the county. During 1988-1998, Goldsmith was successful in eight elections for public office including primaries. His last election was in 1998 when he ran for statewide office and was unsuccessful in his bid to become California State Treasurer. He carried San Diego County.

Judge Goldsmith retired from the political world in 1998 when he was appointed to the bench, choosing instead to share with students a blend of politics and law in his class, Law & Political Process, which he as taught as adjunct professor of law at all three of San Diego’s law schools. The class covers aspects of municipal governance and prosecution of political crimes.

Admitted to the State Bar of California in 1976, Goldsmith graduated magna cum laude from the University of San Diego School of Law that year. His area of law practice was civil business litigation. Jan Goldsmith and his wife of 33 years, Christine, have lived 34 years in San Diego and have raised three children, now ages 27, 24 and 19. Christine is also a Superior Court Judge.
