InfoJohn Gilbert "Jack" Layton

Through two decades of public service, and as leader of Canada's NDP since 2003, Jack Layton is delivering the kinds of results that strengthen people and communities.

In the 2004 federal election, under Layton's new leadership, a revitalized NDP doubled its national vote. Backed by more NDP MPs, Layton soon made history by rewriting the Liberal budget — cancelling corporate tax cuts and instead, investing that money into ordinary peoples' priorities.

Buoyed by those results, Layton led a successful 2006 election campaign that earned the support of half a million more Canadians — and expanded the NDP caucus by more than 50 per cent.

Jack Layton promotes solutions that put working families first, before well-connected insiders. While other parties promote reckless tax breaks, Layton believes there are more important priorities to address first, such as:

-creating opportunity for young people through education and training;
-offering dignity to seniors through better care and retirement security;
-improving public health care and stopping privatization;
-creating jobs while transforming a polluting economy to a sustainable one; and
-cleaning up corruption and making government accountable.

Jack Layton honed his trademark pragmatism as a stand-out municipal leader. This six-term Toronto city councillor spearheaded some of the most innovative projects seen in a generation. And it was Layton, as Federation of Canadian Municipalities President, who issued the call for a New Deal for cities and communities.

Outside politics, Layton has been chair of the Toronto Board of Health, a university professor, a small business owner, an author and a respected scholar. He studied foreign investment and public policy at York University, earning his PhD in 1984.

Jack Layton grew up in the small town of Hudson, Quebec. He has two grown children (Sarah and Mike) and lives in Toronto with his wife Olivia Chow and her mother Ho Sze.
