| Info | Adam Cote comes from a long line of hard working Mainers. His paternal grandfather, Harvey "Pee Wee" Cote, lived in Sanford his whole life, was an undefeated amateur boxer and worked as a welder at Hussey Seating and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for over 20 years, while Adam's grandmother, Yvette, washed dishes at Nasson College in Springvale, where they raised their three children.
His maternal grandfather, Earle Ahlquist, from Scarborough, served in the battle of Iwo Jima with the Fourth Marine Division during World War II and watched the historic flagraising on Mt. Suribachi from a nearby foxhole. He was wounded after nine days of intense combat on Iwo Jima. After the war, Earle returned to Maine where he ran his own construction company and worked as a Maine Guide for 35 years. During the 1950's, Red Sox legend Ted Williams was one of his clients on a fishing trip to the Allaghash River region of northern Maine. Adam's grandmother, Betty Ahlquist, worked at L.L. Bean for several years.
Adam's father, Roland Cote, was a teacher and coach at Sanford High School for 30 years and has also been active in public service, having served as a Town of Sanford Selectman, Town Councilor, Commissioner of the Parks Department and Trustee of the Sanford Water District. Adam's mother, Kitty Chadbourne, lives in Cumberland and is active in many different organizations, including the Portland Museum of Art, Dyer Library/SacoMuseum, Saco Bay Rotary Club, Maine Nordmenn and the Daughter's of the American Revolution. His brother, Guy, is a junior high school history teacher at a public school in Tampa, Florida.
After graduating from Sanford High School, Adam attended Colby College in Waterville, graduating with Honors with a degree in International Studies. At Colby, he was president of the Colby Debate Team and a standout football and baseball player.
While many of his fellow classmates from Colby College accepted high-profile jobs after graduation, out of a sense of service to his country, Adam opted to enlist in the U.S. Army Reserves as a military policeman. Adam was deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina as part of the NATO peacekeeping mission, Operation Joint Guard. He served in Bosnia from October 1997 until April 1998. In Bosnia, Adam was involved in apprehending several war criminals wanted by the Hague; he organized a "Toys for Tots" program in his platoon to distribute toys and stuffed animals to the children of Bosnia ravaged by war; and he volunteered to teach English at a Bosnian High School.
Upon his return from Bosnia, Adam received his law degree cum laude from the University of Maine School of Law, where he was Articles Editor of the Maine Law Review. After passing the bar exam, Adam began practicing law at Pierce Atwood LLP in Portland. Adam's practice has focused on domestic and international energy related law and policy as well as real estate law. Domestically, Adam has advised Maine businesses on State and Federal energy related matters, with a particular focus on renewable energy. He has also assisted Maine businesses real estate related matters. Internationally, Adam has worked in Albania, Bosnia and Croatia, assisting those countries on restructuring their energy sectors.
Following law school and the start of a career as an attorney, Adam was redeployed to serve in Iraq as a platoon leader with Maine’s 133rd Engineer Battalion. He led over 100 convoys in Iraq and was also in charge of multiple reconstruction efforts, including building schools and medical clinics. Adam was in the mess hall on the U.S. base in Mosul on December 21, 2004 when a suicide bomber walked in and blew himself up, killing or wounding over one hundred soldiers and civilians. Adam was awarded an Army Commendation Medal for his leadership during the attack. He returned from Iraq in March 2005. As an officer and leader of troops in combat, Adam was, and continues to be, extremely frustrated at the poor decisions made by politicians in Washington concerning the war in Iraq.
Moved by the extreme poverty and deprivation of Iraq, Adam took it upon himself to do more. Adam created and spearheaded the "Adopt an Iraqi Village" program, beginning as a one man's effort to distribute school supplies, kitchen and household items, toys, clothes and blankets to destitute Iraqis. What began as an "idea" quickly formulated into a major operation. Thanks, in part, to some early articles published in several Maine newspapers about the program, Adam received well over 1,600 packages from Maine families wanting to assist, including schools, churches, civic groups, small businesses, major organizations and individuals that simply wanted to help. The Adopt an Iraqi Village Program delivered items to dozens of villages throughout Iraq.
Adam and his wife, Paulina, have been married for six years. Adam and Paulina were engaged soon after Adam returned from Bosnia and married in Sanford on July 24, 1999. The couple moved to Portland in 2001 where they currently reside. Soon before he left for Iraq, Adam and Paulina found out they were expecting their first child. Ana Grace Cote was born on November 10, 2004. Adam returned home from Iraq when Ana was four months old. Their second daughter, Audrey Elizabeth Cote, was born February 21, 2006. The Cote's are expecting their third child in August 2007. Paulina taught high school Spanish in Sanford and Yarmouth for several years. She received her Bachelor's degree from Florida State University and her Master's degree from Middlebury College.
Adam is currently one of only three Mainers serving as a member of the National Advisory Council for the Small Business Administration. He is a regular guest speaker at numerous Maine schools where he gives a speech entitled "The Top Ten Things I Wish I knew when I was in High School." He also serves as a member of the Maine Real Estate Developers Association legislative committee, the Greater Portland Board of Advisors for the Salvation Army, the Maine Bar Association Community and Public Relations Committee, the Colby College Alumni Council and regularly volunteers for Jobs for Maine Graduates and has assisted indigent people seeking legal representation for the Volunteer Lawyers Project and the Guardien Ad Litem Court Appointed Special Advocate Program.
Adam is the founding member and current president of the Maine Young Democrats, an affiliate of the Young Democrats of America. He previously served as a Town Meeting Member in Sanford.
