InfoNew Hampshire Congressman Charlie Bass is an experienced and effective lawmaker in the U.S. House of Representatives. 2nd District voters first elected Bass to Congress in 1994 when he defeated two-term incumbent Congressman Dick Swett. The Peterborough native, who has been targeted by Democrats and out-of-state special interests for defeat in subsequent elections, has emerged from each consecutive campaign with an increasing margin of victory.

Bass's mix of Yankee frugality and independence is almost perfectly in tune with the philosophy of his district. A lifelong member of the GOP, Bass has always fought for the conservative principles of lower taxes, smaller government, a strong national defense, and personal responsibility. Fiercely Independent, the four-term Member of Congress is not afraid to break ranks with party leaders to do what he feels is in the best interests of his constituents.

A consistent and vocal reformer, Bass defied party leaders and signed a petition to ensure a fair vote on McCain-Feingold and helped pass the bipartisan campaign finance reform bill. The Congressman's strong support for the conservation of open spaces and the preservation of natural habitats prompted his vote against an energy bill that allowed oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The Concord Monitor wrote, "His commendable vote against the policy was only the latest evidence of his caring attitude toward the environment. As he did on campaign finance reform, Bass also showed his willingness to make the correct choice between supporting a president of his own party and representing the views of his constituents."

Bass made a commitment to his constituents to fight for full funding of federal assistance for special education. Two yeas ago, the Congressman opposed a Republican budget that did not provide adequate funding for special education. This year, Bass fought single-handedly to include in the House budget annual increases to reach full federal funding within 10 years. National education groups have honored Bass for his successful efforts on this issue. Closer to home, Tom Enright of the New Hampshire School Board Association wrote Bass " matched his words to his actions in supporting full funding for special education."

Motivated by his two young children, Bass worked as a Member of the House Budget Committee to make tough decisions, which led to the first balanced budget in 40 years, a smaller, more responsible - and responsive - federal government, and a better future for hard working Americans and their children. In recent years, Bass has continued to work to control spending while meeting our nation's important priorities. The 2nd District Congressman also serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which worked this year to lower drug prices and add an affordable, voluntary prescription drug benefit to Medicare.

Bass began his public service to New Hampshire by serving in both the New Hampshire House and Senate. He currently lives in his hometown of Peterborough with his wife Lisa and two children, Lucy and Jonathan.
