Info | MILLER, Homer Virgil Milton, a Senator from Georgia; born in Pendleton District, S.C., April 29, 1814; moved with his parents to Rabun County, Ga., in 1820; attended the common schools and graduated from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1835; continued medical studies in Paris and commenced practice in Cassville, Ga., in 1838; unsuccessful Whig candidate for election to the Twenty-ninth Congress in 1844; served during the Civil War in the Confederate Army as a surgeon and as medical director, surgeon of posts, and inspector of hospitals in Georgia; resumed the practice of medicine in Rome, Ga.; member of the State reconstruction convention in 1867; member of the faculty of the Atlanta Medical College; upon the readmission of Georgia to representation was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate on July 28, 1868; qualified on February 24, 1871, and served until March 3, 1871; trustee of the University of Georgia at Athens; died in Atlanta, Fulton County, Ga., May 31, 1896; interment in Myrtle Hill Cemetery, Rome, Ga.
