Info | On March 10, 1900, Edward J. Barrett was born in Chicago. Barrett made a career out of military and public service by volunteering for duty in both World Wars and by being elected to three state offices.
He enlisted in the army in World War I at the age of seventeen, served in the infantry in France, and received the Purple Heart. In 1930, Barrett won election as State Treasurer and later as Auditor of Public Accounts.
When World War II broke out, he enlisted again at the age of forty-three and served in the Marine Corps in the South Pacific. While serving overseas in 1944, the Democrats wanted Barrett to become a candidate for Illinois Secretary of State. While recuperating from a wound at a naval hospital, Barrett won the election, and received a medical discharge to hold the office. After eight years of reform in drivers license laws and registrations, Barrett lost the election in the 1952 Republican landslide.
Barrett then succeeded Richard J. Daley as Cook County Clerk in 1955 and remained in that position until 1972. Later, he was found guilty of taking bribes and sentenced to three years in prison. However, due to his deteriorating physical condition, the court ruled that he would serve his sentence in his apartment in Chicago. Barrett died in 1977.
