Upon Patrick's graduation from Yale Law School, Patrick clerked for Judge Sam C. Pointer, Jr., then the Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama. Before taking a leave of absence to run for mayor of the City of Birmingham, Patrick was the first African-American partner at Maynard Cooper & Gale, one of the preeminent law firms in the Southeast.

Patrick's work has been featured on BET, CNN, The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, The Washington Post and The Birmingham News. In a 2006 survey of his peers conducted by the Birmingham Business Journal, Patrick was voted "Best of Bar" in recognition for being one of the top attorneys in Birmingham.

Examples of some of the cases Patrick handled include:

* winning a $27.5 million jury verdict in three-week trial for software company in trade secrets case, one of the largest verdicts ever obtained in the Circuit Court of Jefferson County, Alabama. The case was listed as #60 in the Top 100 Verdicts of 2005 by VerdictSearch. (The Alabama Supreme Court recently overturned the case which is set for retrial.)

* representing a group of African-American woman suing Dillard's for employing racially discriminatory pricing in the provision of "wash and sets."

* successfully defending a major New York investment banking firm in three-week trial in Circuit Court of Montgomery County, Alabama relating to WorldCom securities fraud litigation. The trial resulted in hung jury 10-3 in favor of his client.

* winning settlement for a group of African-American employees in a race discrimination suit against the City and County of San Francisco.

* winning settlement against rap star Tupac Shakur and fairground owners for wrongful death of four-year old child at rap concert.

Patrick has been an Alabama Bar Examiner. He was also a member of the ABA Commission on Opportunities for Minorities in the Profession. In addition, Patrick is a member of the board of directors of Commonwealth National Bank, the only federally-chartered minority-owned bank in the State of Alabama.

In early 2006, Patrick founded a non-profit called Birmingham Vision. Through Birmingham Vision, Patrick raised money to hire during the summer over 150 children in the Birmingham City Schools to clean up the neighborhoods. The non-profit also provided over 400 fans to senior citizens without air conditioning and provided other services to our senior citizens.

In his spare time, Patrick coaches the Alabama Roadrunner Nike basketball team, one of 24 traveling teams sponsored by Nike. The team is comprised of high school girl All-Stars from around the State of Alabama. The team qualified for the Final Four in 2006 in the United States Junior Nationals out of over 200 teams from around the country. Patrick also helps raise money for the Alabama Roadrunner program which has helped dozens of underprivileged inner-city girls obtain scholarships to college.

Patrick comes from a family committed to public service. His father, Gary Cooper, was one of the first black two-star generals in the United States Marine Corp. His combat record is in the Marine Corp Hall of Fame. Gary Cooper was one of the first blacks elected to the Alabama House of Representatives. He was the Commissioner of then the Department of Pension and Securities. He was also the United States Ambassador to Jamaica.
