InfoBackground: Rob McCord is a venture capitalist, President of the Eastern Technology Council, and a teacher.

As a venture capitalist, McCord serves as a Managing Director of Pennsylvania Early Stage Partners, a $150 million pair of venture funds, and as a Principal in the $20 million Eastern Technology Fund. These funds provide seed and early-stage funding and guidance for technology companies in the Eastern Corridor. His investments range across information technology, biotechnology, software, optoelectronic, and technology-service industries.

At the Technology Council, McCord helps top executives of more than 1,200 member companies raise capital and find valuable contacts, capital, and information. He also leads a staff that provides innovative educational and financial programs, events, and publications.

As a teacher and a lecturer, McCord has worked as a Senior Fellow and Adjunct Faculty Member at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and at Haverford College. He also regularly provides briefings and speaks to business groups.

On the paid lecture circuit, McCord has spoken to hundreds of organizations, including Fortune 500 companies and leading trade associations. McCord usually focuses on areas where finance, politics, and technology overlap. He also frequently leads strategy sessions and provides provocative briefings that highlight emerging challenges, new technologies, and competing forecasts.

McCord previously served as a senior executive at Safeguard Scientifics, Inc., a publicly- traded firm that provides venture capital and strategic management services for technology-oriented companies.

Before he became a venture capitalist and teacher, McCord served as CEO of the bipartisan Congressional Institute for the Future, where he ran a staff which tracked legislation and provided policy analyses and briefings. (The Congressional Institute for the Future was a think-tank that focused on the future implications of emerging trends, technologies, and policy decisions, and it was created at the recommendation of then-U.S. Senators John Heinz and Al Gore.) In addition, during a decade of service on Capitol Hill, McCord worked as chief of staff, speechwriter, budget analyst, and press secretary in a variety of Congressional offices. He specialized in budget and deregulatory issues.

Extraordinarily active in corporate and civic governance, McCord has served on the boards of a broad variety of private and publicly-traded corporations and organizations.

McCord received his M.B.A. from the Wharton School, and he earned his bachelor's degree, with high honors in History and Economics, from Harvard University.
