InfoEllen Young made New York State history when she was elected in 2006 as the first Asian-American woman to serve in the legislature. Months later, Young set another important milestone when she passed a total of four bills, making her the first Asian-American to pass a law in New York State.

Her district encompasses the 22nd Assembly District, which includes parts of Flushing lying east of the Van Wyck Expressway, from the Long Island Expressway to several blocks north of Northern Boulevard.

An immigrant from Taiwan who came to the U.S. at the ripe age of 25 with limited resources, Ellen immediately fell in love with the endless possibilities of America. Since then, she has become an immigrant success story and advocate for her community. Among her many achievements, she co-founded the Chinese-American Women’s Association and was named as the first female Asian Auxiliary Police Officer in Queens County.

A single mother who raised her daughter, Coral, in public schools, Ellen believes education is the key to success and overcoming cultural misunderstandings. She has dedicated her public service career to helping families achieve their American Dreams. Over the past three decades, she has fought passionately for human rights and racial harmony in New York City, and she has committed herself to serving the community, from helping domestic violence victims to hosting fund raisers for Hurricane Katrina victims.

In her public service career, she has served as the President of the Chinese American Voters Association, the President of the Friends of Queens Library and the Vice Chair of the Flushing Asian Lunar New Year Celebration Committee.

She has also served as a Board Member on the Queens District Attorney’s Advisory Council, a Board Member on the Queens Borough President’s Advisory Committee, a Board Member of the New York Police Department’s Advisory Council and as a Board Member on Senator Hilary Clinton’s Immigration Policy Advisory Board.

Before her election to the New York State Assembly, Ellen served the 22nd Assembly District as the District Administrator to Flushing’s City Councilmember John Liu, the first Asian-American elected to the New York City Council.

In the Assembly, Ellen is committed to improving the quality of life and education for her constituents by working to secure more after-school programs, decreasing classroom sizes, hiring better teachers, providing more affordable housing, improving access to health care and bettering the quality of life for senior citizens. Above all, Assemblywoman Young believes in securing a fair share for the people 22nd Assembly District.

She and her daughter, Coral, live in Flushing.
